All links, all vibes. 🍒

Office tattoos, office fruits, and a weird launch from LinkedIn.

We have an all Bright Reads issue this week! Enjoy.

  • 💫 Is it possible to have a ~vibey~ culture on a remote team? We shared our top tips for building a super engaged remote culture with Elevate.

  • 🧡 This Walrus piece on how workplace diversity fails Indigenous employees is a wild ride. From candidates being asked to submit videos of themselves in traditional regalia to a (possibly shady) workplace Indigenization consultancy selling ideas like this to banks, it sheds light on corporations investing in inclusion while completely missing the point.

  • 📖 Isn’t the idea of work setting us free rather ominous? Is the American dream to “be your own boss” leading us towards further dystopia? This is a really thoughtful piece in the New Yorker, sharing from two upcoming books on the philosophical place of work in our lives.

  • 🍌 Amazon managers are mad about office employees eating too much fruit. A hilarious memo ensued.

  • 🖤 Stigma around tattoos at work has shifted — but some bias still remains (Worklife). Personally, as a heavily tattooed person working in tech and creative industries, especially in a role with an uncool reputation, I’ve found mine to be a plus in convincing folks I’m not about to ruin their fun. But that won’t apply to everyone!

  • 🎮 Not satisfied with devolving into Facebook-level personal shares and general sh*tposting, LinkedIn is introducing games for some reason.

  • 👀 Screen life is hard on your eyes! Take a moment for this cute comic (via NPR) to learn about taking good care of them in an online world.

  • 💸 The more you earn, the harder it is to find a job right now. (Business Insider)

  • ⏰ Why shorter days, not weeks, could be the answer to work-life balance. As someone who goes into deep focus tunnels that start to crash and burn around 3 or 4pm, I’m intrigued. (Worklife)

  • 📈This is a potentially interesting tool that takes a few inputs (your company size, industry, funding level, etc) and autogenerates a benchmark of headcount per department, how many managers vs. ICs you should have, normal attrition rates, etc. for your stage. Noting that it’s in beta, only applies to tech companies, and all of this is pretty nuanced stuff, it’s still fun to play around with.

  • 🔨 Ontario is majorly increasing fines for organizations that fail to pay wages, penalize employees for taking pregnancy or parental leave, and have unequal pay for equal work.

  • 🧐 The underground economy of fake Glassdoor reviews. (Careerfair)
