Hi friends,
Non-profits are doing some of the most meaningful work out there, often with small teams that carry a lot. And while the mission is usually clear, how work actually feels day to day is not always talked about as openly. New research from Future of Good puts some language to what many people are already experiencing, with one in five employees considering leaving their jobs, and burnout showing up in a major way.
In our work with non-profits, this isn’t surprising. We see teams that care deeply and are doing their best with limited time and resources, but without the core people systems that make work feel rewarding and predictable. The research points to five areas that matter most:
Clear pay rules and salary structures
Formal salary review and raise processes
Structured onboarding for new employees
Performance review processes
Equity and inclusion policies
More than half of non-profit employees report having three or fewer of these in place. When these foundations are missing, it’s not just about missing process; it’s a direct line to burnout, friction, confusion and, ultimately, disengagement.
How can we do better, with limited time and resources? In our latest piece for Early Magazine, we walk through each of the 5 core HR practices that affect non-profit employee engagement, and share practical, easy and budget-friendly ways to start building them. Non-profit employees support so many incredible causes; it’s time we support them too.
