Practical ways that leaders can support survivors.

Hi friends,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the role workplaces play when someone is going through something difficult at home. Domestic violence is more common than many of us realize, and when you’re a people manager, leader, or HR, you may be the person someone turns to for help or support.

To recognize International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (today, November 25), we’ve just published a resource for leaders who want to handle that conversation with care and provide meaningful support for a team member who discloses violence, stalking or other abuse in their personal life. It also contains a call to action: Draft a policy on domestic violence, and add it to your handbook. Outline who someone should go to if they feel unsafe at home, how you’ll handle privacy concerns, and any work accommodations available to support them and keep them safe- we cover lots of ideas here. Knowing that a workplace is supportive, and that disclosures will be handled with care, can make all the difference in helping someone feel safe enough to share what’s going on, and to get help.

For practical, trauma-informed ideas on how workplaces can support team members experiencing domestic violence, read ahead here:
